This piece comes from a series of vases called, "You Belong Among the Wildflowers." The title comes from the Tom Petty song of the same title. The lyrics are, "You belong among the wildflowers/You belong in a boat out at sea/You belong with your love on your arm/ You belong somewhere you feel free." The vase references the act of giving flowers after the passing of loved ones and how beauty offers moments of peace and freedom in the grieving process. The vases are thrown on a wheel, shaped to be functional--easy to wash, easy to store away, easy to hold in the hand. After the vase is thrown and trimmed, it sits under plastic slowly drying to what is called the bone dry stage. This generally takes a few days. In its bone dry stage the design of the flowers is applied with a paintbrush with shellac. Additional fine lines are created with a small tool. When the shellac dries, the vase can be abraded with a damp sponge causing the design to have a raised feel. Then the piece goes into the first firing (aka as the bisque firing) and the shellac burns away. After the bisque firing, the piece is checked for cracks. If passing muster, glaze is applied to the inside of the vase to make it water safe and then put back into the kiln. This firing goes up to the clay's appropriate vitrification temperature and then cools slowly in the kiln. After it cools it is again checked for cracks. The successful pots then get sanded a number of times with sandpaper with grits between 400 and 1,600. This is what gives the porcelain a silky texture. The flowers are unknown flowers-not typical flower seen in a floral shop arrangement. This is a deliberate choice in efforts to highlight nature as a the designer versus the floral designer. In addition, the wildflower motif invites the viewer time to take pause and ruminate on what is still lovely in the natural world and in our memories.

Special Rate Items are items that are over-sized or not eligible for free shipping over $250. You total order will be charged a flat rate of $25 to ship. Special Rate Items will be noted as such in the item's description.

Sales Tax
Peters Valley is required to charge sales tax on purchases shipped to New Jersey.
Insurance
Insurance can be purchased separately through third-party company Route during checkout. Route provides protection for shipments that are lost, broken, or stolen. Route is added to your cart at checkout to enable protection by default, but can be removed if you chose to opt out of insuring your order. If you choose to opt out of the Route Insurance, and your package is lost, stolen or damaged, you will have to file a claim with the shipping carrier directly.
